Costs of War

Jennifer Heath is an independent scholar, award-winning activist and organizer, cultural journalist, curator and the author and/or editor of sixteen books of fiction and non-fiction, recently Book of the Disappeared: The Quest for Transnational Justice, with Ashraf Zahedi (University of Michigan Press 2023). Other titles include A Housse White with Sorrow: Ballad for Afghanistan (Roden Press1996), The Scimitar and the Veil: Extraordinary Women of Islam (Paulist Press, 2004), The Veil: Women Writers on Its History, Lore and Politics (University of California Press, 2008), and The Jewel and the Ember: Love Stories from the Ancient Middle
East (Interlink Books, 2024). She is also co-editor with Ashraf Zahedi of Land of the Unconquerable: The Lives of Contemporary Afghan Women (California 2011), Children of Afghanistan: The Path to Peace (University of Texas, 2014). Heath founded the Seeds for Afghanistan project on behalf of Afghans4Tomorrow and the Afghanistan Relief Organization Midwife Training and Infant Care Program, now International Midwife Association. She was born in Melbourne, Australia, grew up in Japan, Colombia, Bolivia, Afghanistan, Switzerland and Spain. She now lives in Boulder, Colorado.
